What Can You See In This ABC?

Jane Ricketts and Jo Vosailagi

The newly launched What Can You See in this ABC book brings together some of Fiji’s best-known artists with the goal of inspiring a reading culture among Fiji’s children.

Authors Jane Ricketts and Joanne Vosailagi – who have combined their love of Fiji with their passion for reading and art – say the book is multilayered.

“For many years, a lot of Fijian children haven’t had access to books, and in some cases, their parents may not be readers, or they simply can’t afford books as they are expensive,” Ricketts said at the book’s launch yesterday.

“We wanted to provide books that reflect the children’s lives, so they can see themselves in the stories. It was important to include Fijian children and aspects of Fiji’s culture in the book,” she added.

What Can You See in this ABC includes illustrations of our traditional garland (Salusalu), mat (Ibe), bell/drum (Lali) and yams (Uvi).
